Evelyn Fay "Byllee" Lang


1908—Born near Didsbury, Alberta, Canada

1926-1930 – is a student at the Winnipeg School of Art

1930s—studies sculpture at the Ontario College of Art and later moves to Europe

1935—returns to Canada, leaving her husband behind in Spain

1936—establishes the deMarin School of Sculpture in Winnipeg

1940—joins the faculty of the Winnipeg School of Art and teaches there for three years

1946—moves to Bermuda

1948—begins a stint as an instructor at the Bermuda School of Art

1952—bust of Davy Douglas, a well-known carriage driver, is exhibited in Toronto

1954 —float “Surf Riding” wins top prize for A. S. Cooper’s at the annual Floral Pageant.

1958—receives commission for the Anglican Cathedral reredos

1959—designs (with John Kaufmann) and makes dancers’ costumes for My Heart Stays Here, a production based on Shakespeare’s The Tempest, performed in honour of Bermuda’s 350th anniversary. 

1962—the first Cathedral statue, of Christ, is installed and dedicated in July. Seven more statues are in place by Christmas.

1966—dies with five statues unfinished.
