Mary Prince


Around 1788—Born at Brackish Pond

Around 1800—Sold to Captain John Ingham and Mary Spencer Ingham of Spanish Point

Around 1805—Sold to Mr. D and sails to Turks Island to work in the salt ponds

1815—Returns to Bermuda with Mr. D— and remains his slave, tending the farm and working in the household, where she is sexually abused

Around 1816—Leaves Bermuda for Antigua with the Woods

Around 1817—Baptised in the English (Anglican) Church, but subsequently joins the Moravian Church

December 1826—Marries Daniel James, a free man

1828—Travels with the Woods to England

November 1828—Leaves the Woods household and finds her way to the offices of the Anti-Slavery Society

April 1829—Finds work as a domestic

December 1829—Joins the Pringle household as a domestic servant

1831The History of Mary Prince is published

February 1833—Prince gives evidence at first libel trial

March 1833—Prince gives evidence at the second trial, then disappears into history

July 31, 1833—The House of Commons in the United Kingdom passes Emancipation bill.

August 1, 1834—The Emancipation bill takes effect—slaves are emancipated in all British colonies, including Bermuda.
