Sir Henry Tucker

1920-1922—Attends Sherborne School, in Dorset, England

1923—Moves to Oklahoma to seek his fortune, but returns home penniless

1924—Meets American nurse Catherine Barstow who is vacationing in Bermuda and follows her to New York, where he starts a career in banking.

August 17, 1925—Marries Catherine in New York

1929—Loses all his savings in the stock market crash

Early 1930s—Re-establishes his career, managing investments.

1934—Returns to Bermuda to take up the number two post at the Bank of Bermuda

July 8, 1935—The first exempt company is set up in Bermuda, largely because of contacts Tucker  had established in New York.

1938—First elected to Parliament and is also promoted to number one post of general manager at the bank.

1940—Lower House approves Tucker’s income tax bill, but Upper House turns it back

January 21, 1941—Flies to London as member of a three-man delegation to work out arrangements for U.S. bases.

November 1942—Appointed to Executive Council

April 21, 1944—Pilots Women’s Suffrage Bill through Parliament which gives women property owners the right to vote.

1947—Chairs all-white parliamentary committee to investigate inequities highlighted in the Bermuda Workers Association petition.  

1948—Steps away from politics to devote his attention to his bank duties.

1953—Re-elected to Parliament and chairs nine-member Inter-racial Committee

1959—Terms Theatre Boycott  “a curious affair.”

1963—Adults over 25 receive full voting rights in historic election, but property owners get an extra “plus” vote.

1964 —Forms United Bermuda Party in response to the Progressive Labour Party, founded a year earlier.

1966—Leads United Bermuda Party delegation to London for a constitutional conference.

May 22, 1968—Becomes Government leader, after United Bermuda Party win 30 of 40 seats in Parliament in the first election held under full universal suffrage.

1969—Resigns as general manager of the Bank of Bermuda

December 1971—Resigns as Government Leader

1978—Stamp collection sells in London for $1million

1986 — Dies at his Paget home at age 82.
