(Above and above right) Pilot Darrell’s house in St. George’s remains in family hands nearly 200 years after his death.

(Right) Darrell’s grave at the burial ground for slaves and free blacks at St. Peter’s Church. A  plaque that markes the gravesite was restored in April 2007 and bears the following inscription:

JAMES DARRELL

Who died 12th April 1815 aged 66 years.
In his publick life as a servant of his country
he obtained the general approval of his talents and worth.
In his private walk as a member of his community
his name will long be remembered for his usefulness and integrity.
His faith in Christ and his many works of charity
eminently proved him a CHRISTIAN.
Gone now to God, his final rest,
In his enjoyment to be blest.
Gone now to heaven, the seat of bliss
His pleasure in perfection is.
