Richards is first black leader
December 29, 1971

On December 29, 1971, Sir Edward Trenton Richards (1908-1991) became Bermuda’s first black leader, replacing Sir Henry Tucker. The previous year, Richards made history by becoming the first black man in Bermuda to be knighted.

He was born in British Guiana (now Guyana) and came to Bermuda in 1930 to teach at Berkeley Institute. He later became a lawyer and parliamentarian. He was first elected to Parliament in 1948, representing Warwick Parish.

Richards’ election by his UBP colleagues as government leader to replace Tucker was unanimous and was generally well received in Bermuda and overseas, especially in his native Guyana, although some accused the UBP of window-dressing. Richards received his own mandate when the UBP was returned to power in the June 1972 election.

During his tenure, Richards negotiated changes to the Constitution with the British Government, which resulted in the title of Government Leader being changed to Premier. The Executive Council became the Cabinet, and Members of the Executive Council became Ministers and Member of Colonial Parliament (MCP) was changed to Member of Parliament (MP).

Byllee Lang
December 4, 1908-December 3, 1966

Byllee Lang was an established sculptor when she came to Bermuda for a six months’ vacation in 1945.  She fell in love with the island and made it her home in 1946. For the next 20 years, until her sudden death of a heart attack, she was an integral part of the arts scene.

Her studio was gathering place for people from all parts of the island. She taught and inspired a generation of artists, black and white, wealthy, working class and in-between. Generous with her time and talents, she waived fees for promising students who couldn’t afford to pay.

Best known for creating the reredos in the Anglican Cathedral, Lang also worked as a prize-winning window dress for A.S. Cooper's and created spectacular flots for the annual Floral Pageant. She always taught in integrated settings, even though schools elsewhere in Bermuda were segregated. Potter and sculptor Carlos Dowling, who worked as her assistant in the last years of her life in exchange for art lessons, said: “She truly did not see colour.”

Icons from Ethiopia

The Ethiopian Orthodox Church on Old Military Road in St. George’s is worth a visit for the religious icons that are being painted on its walls. The paintings, which depict stories from the Old and New Testament, are the work of Ethiopian priest Abba Gebre Hiwot Wolde Samuel. [more ...]
