Sea Venture wrecked July 28, 1609 - The Sea Venture shipwreck, which occurred 401 years ago this month, has been called one of the greatest survival stories in New World history. William Strachey’s first-hand account of the survival of 150 passengers after four days in the grip of a hurricane was the inspiration for Shakespeare’s The Tempest. The Sea Venture was the flagship in a convoy of nine ships that left Plymouth, England in early June 1609 bound for Virginia to deliver supplies to the struggling colony at Jamestown. William H.
